GKN Driveline working with Volvo

GKN Driveline working with VolvoGKN Driveline (www.gkn.com/driveline) has worked with Volvo Cars (www.volvocars.com/uk) to develop the front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive (AWD) drivelines for the new Volvo XC90.

The teams worked closely to find technical solutions that maximised efficiency, rear interior space, durability and performance.

GKN automotive president of engineering Peter Moelgg said: “More and more car manufacturers are partnering with GKN to develop driveline strategies that combine engaging drivability with world-beating efficiency.

“The system created for the all-new Volvo XC90 reflects GKN’s changing role within the industry; no other supplier is positioned to offer complete front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive systems in this way.”

The advances inside the XC90’s AWD driveline include a new VLX ball plunging joint for rear side-shafts that reduces weight and packaging space (this is the world’s first application of the new joint).

The vehicle also uses GKN’s new Countertrack SX8 fixed joint and VL prop-shafts, which improve efficiency and packaging. GKN also supplies the power transfer unit and the rear driveline module, which transform the base front-wheel-drive vehicle into all-wheel drive when used together.

The new lightweight VLX joint is the smallest joint in production for AWD rear side-shafts. Designed to meet the strength and durability demands of hang-on all-wheel-drive systems, GKN expects it will become the technology of choice for automotive manufacturers seeking to maximise interior space in their all-wheel-drive models.

The Countertrack SX8 side-shaft , which is suitable for high-powered front-wheel-drive vehicles, is 50-60% more efficient than competitor technologies; it is also about 15% lighter and 8% smaller, while offering an articulation angle of 52deg.
