ABB (
www.abb.com) the Swiss-based power and automation technology group, has won a contract worth around $25 million from energy group RTE France to supply transformer products and services to create safe, reliable grid connections for on-going offshore wind-power projects.
ABB will supply nine 400MVA booster transformers to help regulate the voltage of power transmitted from four large-scale offshore wind projects being built at various points along the Atlantic coast of France.
Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2017 and conclude in 2020. The energy produced will represent 3.5% of France’s national energy consumption; the country is aiming for 23% of its energy to come from a mix of renewable-energy sources by 2020.
Markus Heimbach, head of ABB’s Transformers business, said: “ABB specialty transformers — based on cutting-edge design and engineering technologies — help to maximise reliability and efficiency in vital grid connections.
“We are pleased to support RTE’s efforts to integrate more renewable energy into the French grid, contributing to a more sustainable world.”
Meanwhile, ABB has also won an order worth around $100 million from Hyundai Heavy Industries for electrical and telecommunication systems to improve safety and reliability, while reducing operating costs and emissions, at oil-field sites off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.
