Tooling for small-diameter boring

Tooling for small-diameter boringFollowing the on-going development of its Micro 100 line of boring tools, Industrial Tooling Corporation Ltd (ITC), Tamworth (www.itc-ltd.co.uk), has introduced its QPF and QPR ranges of boring and profiling tools for machining intricate features on small internal diameters.

QPF boring and profiling tools feature a 50deg clearance angle that allows the machining of 45deg cones on internal diameters; and because these tools have a 0.13 or 0.2mm radius, they can achieve a good surface finish while offering good tool life and chip-breaking characteristics.

QPF tools are available with five shank diameters for bore depths from 5.1 to 53.3mm and minimum bore diameters of 1.27mm through to 12.5mm for the largest shank.

QPR cutters have the same shank diameters and corner radii as the QPF cutters; they also have the same maximum bore depth and diameter capabilities.

The main difference is that QPR tools have a 40deg rake angle; this means that while they don’t have such a pronounced cutting-edge protrusion and cannot machine such deep profiles, they offer enhanced swarf removal.

Available uncoated or with an AlTiN coating, QPF and QPR tools can be applied to a wide variety of materials, including aluminium, brass, copper, steel, stainless steel, high-temperature alloys, thermoplastics and composites.

They are also compatible with the MicroQuik tool-holding system — a robust three-point locking/locating mechanism that gives excellent centre-line repeatability.
