The University of Michigan has opened M-city, a controlled-environment site dedicated to testing connected and driver-less car technologies.
University Mobility Transformation Center director Peter Sweatman said: “There are many challenges ahead, as automated vehicles are increasingly deployed on real roads.
“M-city is a safe, controlled and realistic environment where we are going to figure out how the incredible potential of connected and automated vehicles can be realised quickly, efficiently and safely.”
The facility covers over 32 acres, with simulated urban and suburban settings. It has a network of roads with intersections, traffic signs and signals, streetlights and building facades, along with pavements and construction obstacles.
