MACH 2016 Princes Risborough-based Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal Ltd (
www.sumitomotool.com) will launch its SumiDrill SDM drill, which is targeted at hole-making operations in stainless-steel workpieces (Hall 5 Stand 5361).
The solid-carbide SDM stainless-steel drills is available in diameters from 3 to 16mm diameter (in 0.1mm increments) in 3xD or 5xD length-to-diameter ratios.
By incorporating a sharp cutting edge with a 140deg point angle, Sumitomo says it is possible to reduce cutting forces, thus allowing the use of SDM in lower-powered machine tools.
The drill features large through-tool cooling channels that improve coolant distribution and help to flush out and control swarf by producing smaller chips.
SDM features a flat and narrow single-margin design that is intended to reduce frictional resistance and heat generation when used for drilling more-difficult stainless-steel materials.
Drilling performance is further enhanced by a large chip pocket area and a 30deg helix angle.
