Airbus deal good news for manufacturing

The contract to build 11 new aircraft for an Indonesian airline will secure Airbus jobs and benefit UK companies in the supply chain, according to Prime Minister David Cameron. As reported in Machinery Market last week, he announced that Garuda Indonesia — the national carrier — had placed an order for 11 new A330 aircraft.
The carrier currently operates 14 A330s; the new ones will be designed at the Filton site, and the wings will be built at the company’s Broughton location in North Wales.
Other UK manufacturers will build parts for these aircraft, and more than 50% of the aircraft by value will be manufactured in the UK. Businesses involved in the production include Rolls-Royce in Derby, which makes Trent 700 jet engines, Gloucester-based Messier-Dowty, which makes the landing gear, and GKN, which will carry out some of the assembly work in Filton.
