BAE Systems (
www.baesystems.com) has received a $109.7 million order from the US Army to convert 36 M88A1 recovery vehicles to the M88A2 Heavy Equipment Recovery Combat Utility Lift Evacuation Systems (more commonly referred to as Hercules) configuration.
The conversions allow the M88A2s to recover the army’s heaviest vehicles — such as tanks — without the assistance of another vehicle.
John Tile, director of recovery programmes at BAE Systems, said: “The Hercules is an integral part of the army’s
Armoured Brigade Combat Team and is essential to its recovery missions. The ability to provide single-vehicle recovery for even the heaviest vehicles in today’s fleet increases troop safety and provides significant cost savings.”
The conversion work is expected to begin in August; it will take place primarily at the BAE Systems facilities in Pennsylvania and South Carolina. Deliveries will begin in November 2017 and continue until August 2018.
