Dong Energy to test offshore wind turbines

US-based Dong Energy says it has received the go-ahead to test two offshore wind turbines at Gunfleet Sands, which is 8.5km south-east of Clacton on Sea. According to the company, this is the first time that a Siemens 6MW turbine will be tested offshore; it is also Dong’s first demonstration project in the UK.
CEO Morten Buchgreitz said: “The turbines are in deep waters and will have a much bigger capacity than existing wind farms, so the technology will increase in capacity as well.
“This demonstration project aligns with our ambitions to steer development in the wind industry towards industrialisation to make offshore wind power even more competitive.”
