Queen’s Award for Renishaw plc

Global engineering technologies company Renishaw plc (www.renishaw.com) has received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2012 in the Innovations category. This Queen’s Award, Renishaw’s 15th since its formation in 1973, was in recognition of the company’s SP80 ultra-high-accuracy analogue scanning probe, which is used on co-ordinate measuring machines for the highly accurate measurement of complex parts. This probe is a quill-mounted ‘passive’ scanning device, which means that the probe itself does not contain an internal drive system; this leads to a lighter less-complex product with lower maintenance costs.

Renishaw’s chairman and chief executive Sir David McMurtry said: “Although we have won many Queen’s awards, each one is very special, because the rigorous independent judging process continues to ensure that they are rightly regarded as the UK’s most prestigious awards for recognising commercial and technological success.”

Another development is Renishaw appointing David Grant as an additional non-executive director. Aged 64, Dr Grant has been vice-chancellor of Cardiff University since 2001 and is retiring from that post in September. Prior to that, he held leadership positions at a number of international engineering companies, including Dowty Group and GEC plc, where he was group technical director. He is also a Governing Board member of the Technology Strategy Board.
