3D Systems has introduced GibbsCAM 2016, which is available in the UK from Tech CADCAM (www.techcadcam.net), Bury St Edmunds. Building on the Universal Kinematic Machine (UKM) technology of the previous edition, GibbsCAM 2016 is compatible with a range of operations, including solid modelling, high-speed machining, two- to five-axis milling, multi-task machining and wire EDM.

New features and functions include enhanced thread milling (with support for multi-point tools), tapered threads for both single- and multi-point tools, and improved simulation. In addition, the latest VoluMill technology provides new tool-path strategies designed to optimise the high-speed roughing of large pockets and slots, while the open-face milling strategies introduced are said to reduce cutting times by up to 60%.

Further enhancements include new oriented turning capabilities that give users added control over how tools interact with parts. There are also additional tool-path strategies for five-axis milling; these allow customers to define tool-path direction using the natural flow of a surface with the new Flowline option. Furthermore, tool-paths can now be extended in width as well as length. Improved five-axis drilling, multi-stepped pocket roughing and new gouge-checking strategies also feature.
