Stansted-based Optical Metrology Services (
www.omsmeasure.com) has engineered a pipe bevel-measuring tool that is said to deliver improved weld quality and superior pipeline integrity. Called Bevel 360, the device is designed to give welding contractors new insights into bevel geometry.
Manufactured in the UK, Bevel 360 uses blue laser technology, which is intended specifically for use on reflective surfaces. The tool performs more than 1,000 scans of a pipe end within 30sec, producing a 360deg profile of the bevel face. Once the profile is complete, the tool interfaces with Bevel Pro software — supplied as part of the system — to give a simple traffic-light decision.
The tool can measure pipe diameters ranging from 6 to 48in, with a maximum wall thickness of 45mm. An array of bevel types can be measured, including plain, J-prep, J-prep with back bevel, compound and compound J-prep bevel.
