The new Almac BA1008 HP bar-milling machine from Coalville-based Tornos Technologies UK Ltd (
www.tornos.com) is the ‘big sister’ of the existing BA1008.
The HP acronym stands for High Pressure, as the machine can supply coolant through the spindle at 120 bar. Tornos says this reduces drilling times, especially when undertaking deep-hole operations.
Mounted on the rear of the machine, the coolant delivery system comprises a 120-bar high-pressure pump, a 5-bar pump to supply flood coolant to the machining area, a plate heat exchanger for thermal stabilisation of the coolant, and a tank with a capacity of 300 litres.
Additionally, a transfer tank is mounted on the side of the machine. This allows the coolant leaving the machining area to be filtered through a bag of 100, 50 or 25µm mesh, and then through a 6µm cartridge filter.
In addition to having a chip filtration system that has been designed for optimum effectiveness, the BA1008 HP has been configured for machining metals with a high residual value.
For example, the machining area has a smooth-walled enclosure that minimises chip accumulation and considerably improves chip collection. Indeed, the manufacturer says a machine operator can collect up to 99.97% of the machined material for recycling in less than 20min.
