A Business Readiness Programme designed to help businesses in North Wales prepare for the opportunities offered by Horizon Nuclear Power’s Wylfa Newydd nuclear new build has just been launched and will run until the end of March 2017.
Developed in partnership between the Isle of Anglesey County Council’s (IACC) Energy Island Programme, the Welsh Government and Horizon Nuclear Power — and jointly funded by the latter two — the programme is aimed at helping local companies develop the specialised skill-sets they will need in order to be part of the nuclear industry’s supply chain.
The partnership project team also includes the North Wales Economic Ambition Board and the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.
The programme comprises several training sessions, which will take place across the North Wales region over the coming months and will be targeted specifically at companies in North Wales supplying services that include precision engineering, equipment manufacturing, fabrication and maintenance.
IACC leader Ieuan Williams said: “The proposed Wylfa Newydd Project presents a wide range of transformational supply chain opportunities for businesses on Anglesey and nearby. We’re committed to ensuring that local companies are given every chance to compete for a share of the work that Wylfa Newydd will provide. It is vital for our region’s economy that businesses are ready to capitalise on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and can access the specialist nuclear sector.”
