Malvern-based Lantek Systems Ltd (
www.lanteksms.com) has taken the first step in upgrading its software to take advantage of the increased capability offered by 64-bit microprocessors.
As a result, the company is planning the launch of Lantek Expert native in a 64-bit version.
This will be a specific version of the software, so that customers can benefit from the highest performance offered by current servers and equipment; along with the version for 32-bit systems, it will be included in the launch of the 2017 global
release.
Among other advances, the 64-bit version is estimated to deliver improvements of up to 50% in the speed of some calculation processes. In a move towards Industry 4.0, Lantek Expert for 64-bit systems will be able to use far greater memory volume and do so more efficiently.
It is well documented that 32-bit programs go no further than accommodating 4GB of memory — far less than the memory available nowadays in any computer.
The shift to 64-bit systems will make it possible to address practically all the memory available whenever required. Another significant advantage of the new software will be the increased security offered, both in the execution of code and its installation.
An example of this new feature will be the protection offered with regard to buffer overflows; this ensures the correct and secure execution of the code.
Lantek’s intention is that the 64-bit version will be implemented seamlessly (but at the customer’s discretion) in its 2017 version. In a future version, when deemed appropriate, the 32-bit variant will disappear and the 64-bit version will become the standard offering.
