Government committed to success of HS2The Government has said that it is “100% committed” to building the HS2 high-speed rail line between Birmingham and London. Transport Minister Andrew Jones visited Birmingham to reassure senior figures at the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) that building work will begin next year.

Speaking at a WMCA event, Mr Jones said HS2 is “going to happen” and praised the West Midlands for the way it
is working to “embrace and maximise the economic opportunities” offered by the project.

WMCA chairman Bob Sleigh said: “As hosts, we were determined to show how further devolution of powers can help secure not just a more prosperous West Midlands but also a stronger and better-balanced UK economy.

“We have received tremendous support from the Government, which clearly recognises the contribution the region can make to the wider UK economy through its manufacturing prowess and through its role as a dynamic exporter.

“We now look forward to working with the Government to deliver the powers and investment needed to realise that vision and to safeguard and grow our future economy.”
