Milling from a different angle

Milling from a different angleThe TNGX10 double-sided triangular inserts for shoulder milling applications — launched under the Pramet brand by Chesterfield-based Dormer Pramet (www.dormerpramet.com) — offer depths of cut up to 5mm and feature six cutting edges for low machining costs.

A range of cutters is available, with diameters from 18 to 80mm and high tooth density — even for small diameters. The inserts are suitable for use on materials such as steel, stainless steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metals, and for applications ranging from shoulder, face and slot milling, through to helical interpolation, ramping and progressive plunging.

In a recent product test that ivolved face-milling M3 stainless steel, the TNGX insert demonstrated double the durability of a comparable competitor insert, says the company.

To support the shoulder milling range, Dormer Pramet has also introduced three positive geometries. Geometry F has a narrow peripheral land and is for the light and medium machining of low- to medium-carbon steel.

Geometry M — with a medium ‘T-land’ — is also for the light and medium machining of carbon steel and stainless steel.

Finally, geometry FA has a sharp cutting edge and is intended for machining non-ferrous metals; a polished insert face reduces sticking of the machined material, thereby ensuring good tool life and surface finish.
