The latest addition to the range of boron- and formaldehyde-free coolants from Needham Market-based Master Chemical Europe Ltd (
www.masterchemical.com) has been formulated for the machining and grinding of cast iron and steel, while providing a high order of corrosion protection.
Trim SC440 is a semi-synthetic cutting and grinding fluid concentrate that Master Chemical says delivers low levels of foam not generally seen in products of this type, especially in soft-water areas.
Described as a ‘clean running’ product, it also prevents the ‘loading’ of grinding wheels to help ensure good surface finish and minimal burning. The fluid also keeps machines and the environment clean, even while working on grey iron, says the company; and being a fine micro-emulsion, it reduces carry-off, thereby cutting operating costs.
According to Master Chemical, Trim SC440 will run for long periods without the need for additives; it can also run at low concentrations for high-speed operations where heat removal is a key issue. The product contains no chlorine, sulphur or aggressive biocides, and it can be easily disposed of or recycled.
During trials at a large automotive sub-contractor, where an existing boron-free coolant was delivering poor sump life, a switch to Trim SC440 provided a more stable pH and very low bacterial growth, thus reducing operating costs.
Meanwhile, trials at another manufacturer resulted in superior parts and machine cleanliness following the adoption of Trim SC440.
Here, the coolant was used for turning large valve parts destined for the oil and gas sector — a process that previously left sticky brown residues on the machine when using a competitor’s lower-cost high-boron-content product.
