Natural Resources Wales has given Minesto (
minesto.com) of Sweden the go-ahead to install and operate a 10MW Deep Green tidal-energy power plant in Holyhead Deep, 6.5km off the coast of Anglesey.
A spokesman said: “Holyhead Deep will mark the starting point of the industrialisation of Deep Green technology, which is the world’s first low-velocity tidal-energy project.
Holyhead Deep matches all the site requirements, by providing low-flow tidal velocities at a depth of 80-100m. Following successful deployment and testing of the first installed power plant, more Deep Green devices will be installed to form a tidal-energy array.”
Minesto’s site development manager, Ylva Sörqvist Hultgren, said: “The first phase of the project will include a single Deep Green device, sea-bed foundations and a buoy, with installation planned later this year.
“This first step of implementing our unique technology on a commercial scale is obviously an important one, so it is satisfying to have reached this milestone.”
