An indexable grooving insert with six edges has been added to the family of carbide tooling from Ringwood-based Horn Cutting Tools Ltd (
www.phorn.co.uk).
Designated 64T, the sintered inserts are available with grooving widths up to 3.29mm and feature the ‘00’ geometry. Grooving to depths of 3.5mm is possible, while the maximum workpiece diameter is 65mm.
As a neutral grooving insert, the 64T can be used in either the left- or right-hand holder, and a clamping-screw system is used to hold the insert accurately in the pocket. It is suitable for machining most types of steel, as well as a range of other materials, and it features Horn’s new EG55 coating, which is said to improve tool life considerably.
The application areas being promoted initially are grooving and parting-off for widths of 1.0 and 1.5mm, turning circlip grooves with widths in the range 0.57-3.29mm, and grooving using full-radius inserts with radii of 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, 1.25 and 1.5mm.
