First offshore wind farm for MediterraneanSenvion (www.senvion.com), a global manufacturer of wind turbines, has been appointed by Beleolico Srl (a Belenergia SA affiliate) as the supplier for the proposed Taranto wind farm.

Taranto will be the first offshore wind farm in the Mediterranean Sea, with a total rated power of 30MW. The project will feature 10 Senvion 3.0M122 turbines, each with a hub height of 100m.

These will be located in front of Taranto harbour in the Apulia region of southern Italy, in water depths of 4 to 18m. Delivery and installation are currently planned for summer 2018.

Carlo Schiapparelli, managing director of Senvion Italia, said: “We are proud to contribute our experience to the construction of the first Italian offshore wind farm.

“With very specific requirements of the turbines, Senvion will combine its offshore and onshore experience to provide the optimum turbine type for the Mediterranean Sea.”

Jacques Edouard Lévy, CEO of Belenergia, added: “Belenergia has been investing in the Taranto offshore wind project since 2012.

“After a long administrative and engineering gestation period, we are happy to enter into the industrial phase, with the help of our local and international design engineering firms and the strong support of Senvion.

“Belenergia is well aware that this is the first offshore plant in the Mediterranean sea, with specific challenges to meet.

“But thanks to initial upstream planning, we are confident that this new venture will be an industrial success, both from a technological perspective and for its ecological impact.”
