Lancaster University’s IsoLab opensLancaster University’s IsoLab (www.lancaster.ac.uk)— one of the world’s most advanced facilities for quantum technology — has been officially opened by Professor Philip Nelson, chief executive of the EPSRC.

Unveiling a commemorative plaque, he said: “This is a prime example of what the UK can offer in science and technology. I congratulate the university for this investment in quantum technology, which has huge potential.”

The new facility contains three isolation laboratories, which ensure an “ultra-clean” experimental environment for the extremely sensitive quantum systems and devices that will lead to the technology of the future.

University vice-chancellor Mark Smith said: “This unique facility is a world-beating environment for modern quantum science and technology. It provides support in this field not only for researchers in the university but also for partners and businesses.”

IsoLab provides the capability for work in — for example — quantum optics, nano-machinery, quantum encryption and extreme microscopy. It also offers the lowest temperatures available for cooling quantum systems.

Built completely to order, it includes three 50-tonne platforms sitting inside a 350-tonne concrete tank in order to drastically reduce any vibration, noise and electromagnetic disturbance.

Richard Haley, the inaugural director of IsoLab, said: “We put together a team of scientists and — guided by the expert advice of Professor George Pickett, FRS — worked with the designers and builders to create a purpose-built facility that has some really innovative elements.”
