Waves4Power’s WaveEL (
www.waves4power.com) system was connected to the national power grid in Norway earlier this month, after the installation of the connection hub next to the WaveEL buoy — off Runde Island — a couple of weeks earlier.
The WaveEL buoy, which was launched at Runde in February 2016, has successfully survived a harsh season in stormy winds that saw 14m-high waves. It was taken off site late in 2016 and towed to a local shipyard for maintenance and upgrades before redeployment at Runde in April.
The new proprietary 22kV sea cable — developed by NKT Cables for this particular type of application — was laid from the connection hub to the connection point on shore, a distance of about 3km, at the same time as the hub was installed.
