The new R220.88 face mill from Alcester-based Seco Tools (UK) Ltd (
www.secotools.com) features inserts with eight cutting edges, along with optimised geometries that are said to help reduce cutting forces and increase tool life.
R220.88 cutter bodies have been designed with an 88deg lead angle that allows large depths of cut to be taken using smaller inserts, making the range more flexible and productive when machining close to workpiece side walls and fixtures.
Designed for roughing and semi-finishing operations, R220.88 cutters are suitable for machining cast iron and steels.
The cutter body is made of Idun, a low-wear corrosion-resistant workable and tough stainless steel that provides longevity and durability. This material is also ‘environment-friendly’, as its manufacture does not involve nickel coating.
R220.88 cutter bodies are available in a range of diameters: 50-160mm-diameter bodies use size 12 inserts, while 63-160mm-diameter bodies use size 16 inserts. Each diameter is offered in both standard and close-pitch variants.
Size 12 R220.88 cutter bodies achieve a 9mm maximum depth of cut, while size 16 bodies achieve 12mm.
Right-hand versions of the cutter body are available as standard, with left-hand versions available by request. Having both options allows manufacturers to use these cutters in dual-spindle machines performing simultaneous milling operations.
R220.88 bodies are compatible with Seco’s SNMU inserts, which are secured in the pockets by centre locks or screws, eliminating the need for wedges.
The eight cutting edges on the inserts offer double the tool life of inserts with four edges, so they help to reduce tool inventory and costs. With their ‘neutral design’, SNMU inserts can be applied in right- or left-hand milling operations.
The geometries available include M10 and MD13 for size 12 inserts, plus MD10 and MD16 for size 16 inserts. Grades include MK1500, MK2050, MP1500, MP2500, MS2500 and F40M. An integrated wiper flat ensures good surface finish for semi-finishing applications.
