Gateshead-based excavator manufacturer Komatsu UK (
www.komatsu.eu) is celebrating 30 years of manufacturing at its facility in Birtley, which was opened by the Prince of Wales on 16 July 1987.
The company has just launched a next-generation hybrid excavator, plus a sister machine that uses advanced controls to constantly update drivers on its operation.
The company also recently unveiled a “game-changing” high-reach model. To celebrate the plant’s anniversary, global Komatsu group chief executive Tetsuji Ohashi, was taken on a tour of the factory, along with a delegation from the group’s headquarters in Japan.
He helped to find the Birtley site and worked at the factory during its early years; he said he was delighted to be back.
He also highlighted the company’s impact on the region, saying that local support continues to be overwhelming: “I have nothing but fond memories of my time at Birtley, and I learned so much during my time here. Komatsu UK arrived at a time when industry in the North East was changing dramatically.
“I am not exaggerating when I say the whole region opened its arms to welcome us, and I’m very pleased the strong ties between Gateshead and Komatsu still remain.”
The plant employs over 400 people and it has been responsible for manufacturing more than 65,000 machines, destined mainly for the UK and European markets.
The company recently revealed plans to take on another 40 people to maintain its momentum, and Peter Howe, managing director of Komatsu UK, said it was committed to further decades of success.
