UB Racing clinches second place at FS eventThe University of Birmingham’s student racing team came second in the 2017 Formula Student UK competition, beating all but one of its UK and international rivals in the 75-strong field.

This was the best performance in the team’s 20-year history. Run by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, the competition took place at Silverstone, where the single-seat racing cars designed and built by the teams were put through a rigorous series of static and dynamic tests.

UB Racing (www.ubracing.co.uk) performed very well in all areas, coming seventh in the acceleration test (a 75m timed drag race), second on the ‘skid pad’ (testing the car’s lateral acceleration in a figure of eight) and second in the sprint (a timed ‘flying’ lap around the 1km circuit).

However, the biggest achievement was victory in the endurance event — 22 laps of the circuit with one driver change, testing the car’s durability, reliability and fuel efficiency.

As a result, the team won the trophy for the dynamic events, with only Cardiff University beating them overall due to its performance in the commercial elements of the competition.

2017 also saw the continuation of UB Racing’s partnership with Yamazaki Mazak UK, which supplied a number of machined parts for the team’s racing car for the eighth successive year.

For this year’s car, Mazak machined four sets of front and rear brake disks at its European Technology Centre in Worcester (its engineers also helped UB Racing to design a dry sump system that will be used on next year’s car).

Charles Hodgson, team principal at UB Racing, said: “We were feeling quietly confident going into the 2017 Formula Student competition, and we are ecstatic about the result.

“To finish second in a field of outstanding student engineers from all over Europe is something we are all incredibly proud of.”

Be seen in all the right places!
