Borg Warner has announced that it is supplying 6.35mm components for silent oil-pump chains for Toyota’s new eight-speed automatic transmission, which is fitted to the newly launched 2.5-litre Camry (

The new transmission is Toyota’s first design that employs a chain with an off-axis oil-pump drive.
Joel Wiegert, president and general manager of Borg Warner Morse Systems, said: “We have been providing local production of our silent oil-pump chain in Japan since Toyota’s transmission debuted last year.
“With our broad global footprint, we are now pleased to offer Toyota local manufacturing in the USA for the first time.”
Toyota’s transmission design incorporates an off-axis fluid pump assembly with a chain drive from the torque converter to the fluid pump.
The off-axis design creates more space on the main shaft of the transmission and allows the car maker to use a more efficient pump. Compared with gears, Borg Warner’s silent chain is said to cover the span more effectively.
To reduce noise, vibration and harshness, the silent chain features a dual-link design with two different link profiles to vary the contact points with the sprockets.
