Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) is set to install the country’s first-ever 2,000-tonne stamping machine, which can produce bulky parts such as vehicle body side outer panels, roof panels, floor panels and door panels.
The investment is part of establishing MMPC’s new stamping plant, which is scheduled to start production in January 2018.
This facility will not only enable MMPC to produce its own metal stamped parts but also help the company to comply with the requirements of the Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) programme — to manufacture at least 50% of each vehicle’s assembly weight.
MMPC’s stamping shop will also generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs — and cut delivery lead times. This is the first time that the company will have its own stamping facility in more than 50 years of vehicle manufacture.
MMPC recently sent some of its engineers to Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Japan to undergo training.
They learnt about the principle of stamping, different types of stamping, machine operation, maintenance and repair procedures. They were also taught about caring for the stamping die, which is the most crucial part of the line, as it dictates the output quality.
MMPC is currently ordering metal stamped parts from Mitsubishi Motors Thailand Co Ltd to produce body assemblies of the Mirage hatch back and Mirage G4 saloon.
