US-based AMSC (www.amsc.com) is to supply electrical control systems for South Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co’s 5.5MW offshore wind turbine.

The systems include AMSC’s PowerModule power converters, pitch and yaw converters, SCADA systems and other electronics.

The 5.5MW machine was being developed jointly by Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems and AMSC, until Doosan acquired the prototype turbine design, plus the rights to manufacture and sell the hardware.

Doosan is the engineering, procurement contractor and wind-turbine supplier for the first 60MW phase of the 2.5GW Southwestern offshore wind farm in South Korea, which is scheduled to begin operation in 2019.
