GFG Alliance, the owner of the Lochaber Smelter near Fort William, has unveiled plans to become the largest provider of renewable energy in the UK (

It has begun the process of acquiring Perth-based Green Highland Renewables (GHR), which has 18 hydro-electric
stations in the Scottish Highlands.
It has also proposed constructing eight new hydro-electric plants on land that it owns in Lochaber, and it is consulting on plans for a 54-turbine wind farm.
The acquisition of GHR is due to be completed by the end of February. GFG Alliance took over the Lochaber Smelter a year ago, and its purchase included hydro power plants near the site and at Kinlochleven — plus more than 100,000 acres of land, including the foot-hills of Ben Nevis.
