Ceramic inserts offer productivity boost

Ceramic inserts offer productivity boost Seco Tools (UK) Ltd (www.secotools.com) says that a combination of its new Secomax CS300 ceramic inserts and RN/RP cutter bodies can “increase productivity by up to 800%” (in comparison with standard milling counterparts) when machining nickel-based heat-resistant super-alloys (HRSA).

Target markets include aerospace and power generation.

Available now from the Alcester-based company, CS300 SiAlON ceramic inserts are designed to provide toughness and high levels of resistance to notch wear, while reducing the effects of thermal shock.

They also optimise flank wear-resistance when higher cutting speeds are used — and accommodate feeds of 0.05-0.15mm per tooth.

Meanwhile, Seco’s new RN/RP cutter bodies are hardened and nickel-coated for optimised reliability.

Furthermore, wedge clamping ensures secure insert locking and effective chip evacuation, while internal air cooling channels contribute to long tool-body life.

The range includes cutter bodies with RP 1204 (pocketing) inserts in diameters from 32 to 50mm.

Cutters with RN 1207 and RN 1204 (facing) inserts are available in diameters from 32 to 125mm.
