Plymouth-based Hellermann Tyton — a manufacturer of insulation, protection and labels for electronic cabling in ships, planes, trains, cars, buildings and white goods — is to build a £7 million factory extension and create 40 jobs, following a 60% growth in demand for its products in the past two years.

The company has received planning permission to build a two-storey unit next to its current base on the International Medical and Technology Park at Derriford.

At 4,500m², the new building will be as big as the manufacturer’s existing factory, which opened in 2011; it will include offices, production space and warehousing. Construction work is due to start in 2019.

Hellermann Tyton (www.hellermanntyton.co.uk), though British-registered, is a global operation with bases in 37 countries and more than 3,800 staff.

In December 2015, it was bought by Delphi Automotive (now renamed Aptiv plc), which is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of automotive parts, with 161,000 employees.

It was founded by Paul Hellermann, who in 1965 invented the Tyton system of bundling cables.
