Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) (
www.eng.mmk.ru) — the third-largest steel company in Russia — has awarded the Italian company Danieli & Officine Meccaniche SpA a contract to modernise the rolled-section workshop’s double-strand mill.
The value of the contract is about 5.5 million euros, and it should be completed in 2019.
The project includes replacing the fans on the cooling roller conveyor with new ones.
They will be equipped with temperature sensors and bearing-vibration sensors, motors with inverters as well as motors attached directly to the impeller shaft.
After modernisation, the ‘heat irradiance’ of the conveyer for the cooling of the wire rod will amount to more than 200W/m
2. The total additional installed power will amount to around 4,500kW.
The modernisation will allow the manufacture of products with properties that meet global and Russian standards for high-carbon steel.
The refurbishment of the mill will serve to increase the content of ‘sorbitized perlite’ in the microstructure of the rolled high-carbon steel, to improve the mechanical properties of the metal and to reduce the unevenness of the microstructure.
The mill will produce wire in the diameter range 5.5-16mm at a maximum speed of 90m/sec and a maximum capacity of up to 130 tonnes per hr.
Moreover, the modernisation of the mill will reduce the down-time associated with the repair and servicing of equipment.
