Artemis waves the flag for Plymouth

Artemis waves the flag for PlymouthPlymouth-based Artemis Optical (www.artemis-optical.co.uk), which designs and manufactures bespoke optical thin-film coatings, has announced a partnership with Plessey Semiconductors to provide the next generation of augmented-reality head-up displays (HUDs).

This is the latest in a series of successes for Artemis, which has produced over 3,000 HUD combiners and currently has products flying on trainer, military and commercial aircraft world-wide.

Sales director Jamie Pindard said: “We are extremely proud to be working with Plessey, combining our unique capabilities to create innovative solutions. I’m especially pleased that this partnership helps to wave the flag for the high-tech industries in Plymouth.”

Plessey (www.plesseysemiconductors.com) CEO Michael LeGoff said: “Working with Artemis on this solution has put us across a cultural chasm, by bringing together the HUD technology — most widely used for defence applications — and our microLED expertise to benefit the augmented-reality industry.”

In a separate move, Artemis has signed a three-year business development and technology partnership with Metamaterial Technologies Inc (MTI) — a smart materials and photonics company — to develop a hybrid coating for the defence industry.

They are looking to create a brand-new hybrid meta filtering solution to combat laser threats for the users of periscopes and sighting systems in armoured vehicles.

Artemis is the only independent non-US coating company qualified to supply laser protection filters to the US military, and it recently celebrated 20 years of that approval.

It has supplied its products to governments around the world; among others, they can be found on all front-line UK MoD vehicles and on defence vehicles in France and Norway.
