British Steel site becomes new home for bed makerLeeds-based Harrison Spinks (www.harrisonspinks.co.uk) is investing £1.8 million in a new wire-drawing facility at British Steel’s Scunthorpe site and creating 22 jobs.

The bed maker — which was founded in 1840 and already employs 600 people at its facilities in Leeds, will use a 40,000ft2 British Steel building to house two wire-drawing lines initially — set to be installed at the end of April.

Using steel rod from British Steel, these lines will produce the ultra-fine wire needed to make pocket springs, The investment will initially create nine jobs, with 13 more to follow when six more lines are installed.

Richard Essery, managing director of Harrison Spinks Components, said: “We have a long-established relationship with British Steel, which provides the high-quality wire needed for our innovative spring technology.

“Partnering with British Steel to launch our new wire-drawing facility in Scunthorpe means we can recycle all our steel waste, creating a closed-loop production process. It also allows us to develop a higher grade of wire for our springs.”

Richards Sims, British Steel managing director (wire rod), said: “Quality and innovation are cornerstones of both companies’ products, so we’re delighted to strengthen our partnership with Harrison Spinks.

“By working together on product development and manufacturing, we’ll be able to further improve our wire-rod grades and ensure that end-users continue receiving the market-leading products synonymous with Harrison Spinks and British Steel.”

Included in the £1.8 million investment in the new facility was a £150,000 grant from the British Steel Support Fund at North Lincolnshire Council.

Rob Waltham, the leader of the council, said: “This is terrific news for North Lincolnshire, as we welcome another top brand to the area.

“I’m delighted that the council was able to play its part in helping to facilitate Harrison Spinks’ expansion plans.”
