Tooling for greater productivity

Tooling for greater productivity The focus of Sheffield-based Ceratizit WNT Ltd (www.wnt.com) will be on recently introduced products and the productivity benefits they can bring (Hall 19 Stand 500).

For instance, the latest generation of parting and grooving blades features the company’s direct-cooling capability, which ensures that cutting fluid is delivered optimally to the cutting area.

Available on WNT’s blade-type tool-holders, the direct-cooling system has two exit points for cutting fluid — one positioned above the cutting edge, the other directly below it.

According to the company, the system is effective when used with a variety of coolant pressures; even at less than 20 bar, the benefits of reduced flank and crater wear are evident. With higher coolant pressures, additional gains such as greater swarf control come into effect.

The result is that cutting speed can be increased by 20-40%, says WNT.

Direct cooling was developed alongside WNT’s DC-SX clamping blocks, in which the blades sit. Coolant is delivered through the block directly into the clamped side of the blade, ensuring a good seal and allowing a variety of overhang lengths to be used, without any negative impact on coolant delivery.

The direct-cooling system is available for use with inserts from 2 to 6mm wide, in a choice of carbide grades — either uncoated or with WNT’s Dragonskin coatings.

Another new product is the latest WTX-Change Feed drill, a three-fluted drilling system with an interchangeable carbide drill head. WNT says that WTX-Change Feed allows increases in feed rates of 50-100% over conventional drills.

These drills are available in diameters from 14 to 32mm in 0.1mm increments, as well as two standard flute lengths of 3xD and 5xD — all with through-tool coolant.

The interchangeable drill heads are manufactured from a carbide grade that is formulated for universal applications in steel and cast iron, while newly developed geometry includes point thinning and a self-centring chisel edge to ensure accurate positioning, even on angled surfaces up to 6deg and in intermittent cutting applications.

Solid-carbide cutters in the WNT range fall into two main categories, Mastertool and Standard, the former being intended for high-performance applications.

Included within Mastertool is the new CircularLine CCI-UNI range of cutters, the company’s first choice for trochoidal milling where extended tool engagement and consistent average chip thickness are key.

The latest CircularLine CCR-UNI is available as a 4xD end mill, and a 3xD end mill with a shorter chip breaker. The diameter range is between 6 and 20mm.

The new WTX-Ti high-performance drill for difficult-to-cut tough or heat-resistant materials features what WNT describes as a stabilisation chamfer on the cutting edge that is designed to improve drilling accuracy.

In addition, the design of the flutes and drill core allows the use higher cutting data due to improved swarf evacuation.

WNT’s DPA 54 multi-layer coating technology helps to improve tool life by almost 100% when drilling titanium alloys and almost 50% when machining Inconel, says the company.

WTX-Ti drills are available in diameters ranging from 7.1 to 20mm, with 3xD and 5xD flute lengths as standard, along with through-tool coolant.

In addition to cutting tools there will be lots more to see on the stand including the brand new Hope HB160 mountain bike, which again will be used as a showcase for tooling which was used not only to manufacture components, but also the complex mould tool to create the carbon frame.

Visitors to the stand will also be able to take advantage of the ‘MACH deal’ where for a minimum order of £100 placed on the stand customers will receive an additional £100 of free tools, along with a branded Zeus handbook (while stocks last).

These orders will also demonstrate the power of the logistics system as they will be taken and processed on the stand and delivered to the customer the following morning.

Finally, there will be a prize draw with donations going to the company’s selected charities, these being the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research.

The prize will be VIP tickets to the Brands Hatch round of the British Superbike Championship.
