Hitachi 802 Intercity Express Train enters serviceThe first of a fleet of new bi-mode trains specifically built for Devon and Cornwall entered service with Great Western Railways (GWR) on 20 August.

The Class 802 Intercity Express Train ran for the first time with passengers on board, forming the 05:53 service from Plymouth to London Paddington.

A second train formed the 07:30 service from Paddington to Penzance. GWR has said half of the 200kph diesel and electric trains for the new fleet are now in Britain, and the driver training programme is well under way.

Hitachi has said that the final train is now on the production line at Pistoia in Italy and will be ready for delivery in January.

Mark Hopwood, GWR’s managing director, said: “We know how important the railway is to the economies and communities of the South West, and I am delighted to see this first new train for Devon and Cornwall services carry passengers.

With an improved timetable, these new trains will enable us to offer a step change in passenger transport. They will help us to provide faster and more-frequent services to the South West, with up to 24% more seats per train and improved on-board facilities.”

The Intercity Express Train harnesses Hitachi’s pioneering bullet-train technology, known for its quality and reliability. It has also been designed to withstand the region’s variable weather conditions, as seen along the Devon coast route in recent years — particularly at Dawlish.

The entire fleet is fitted with hybrid technology, allowing trains to use both diesel and electric power, so passengers can enjoy the benefits of the new trains as soon as possible.

GWR’s order for the new fleet has also had a direct impact on firms in the region.

The businesses located along the Great Western route chosen by Hitachi to supply parts for the new Intercity Express Trains include TiFlex, Brecknell Willis and Knorr-Bremse.
