Solid-carbide cutters for difficult materials

Solid-carbide cutters for difficult materials The S2 family of solid-carbide milling cutters from Chesterfield-based Dormer Pramet (www.dormerpramet.com) has been designed for difficult-to-machine materials, with options for operations ranging from roughing through to finishing.

The cutters include a range of neck options for deep milling, and multi-flute designs to support numerous applications in tough steels, titanium and nickel.

Differential-pitch cutters (S260, S262, S264), for example, reduce chatter and require fewer tool offset adjustments, while providing effective chip removal at high feed rates.

These tools, which are available in diameters from 3 to 20mm, feature an optimised cutting edge designed to reduce edge chipping and prolong tool life.

All have an AlCrN coating for improved resistance to wear and oxidation.

In addition, the S264 milling cutter has a ‘robust corner chamfer’ on the end teeth to further reduce chipping, plus a profile that allows greater material removal rates when roughing.

Meanwhile, the corner radius on the S262 provides a more precise finish and optimises performance, especially in ramping operations.

Dormer Pramet’s six- to eight-flute cutters (S225, S226, S227) feature a high helix angle to keep the cutting edges constantly engaged with the workpiece.

This ensures clean efficient machining and a high-quality surface finish, while the several neck options support pocket milling (up to 8.8¥D) by preventing contact between the shank and the workpiece, eliminating the risk of vibration and scouring.

For general milling applications, the company’s range of four-flute cutters (S216, S217, S218, S219) offers a reach up to 9¥D. This range also features an optimised cutting-edge design and an AlTiN coating for high levels of hot hardness and resistance to oxidation.

Meanwhile, a special edge treatment provides a smooth and quiet machining process, further prolonging tool life. Finally, an assortment of ball-nose cutters (S229, S231, S233) is available in diameters ranging from 1.5 to 16mm.

As well as a special edge treatment to ensure smooth machining, a TiSiN coating provides improved resistance to wear and oxidation in extreme cutting conditions.
