Balfour Beatty wins major TfL contractBalfour Beatty has been appointed by Transport for London to ‘deliver’ the new London Underground track renewals contract, worth up to £220 million over four years.

This will ensure the continued reliability of the 1,047km London Underground network; the contract includes renewing 13km of ballasted track, plus associated drainage, signalling, traction power and rail conductor works.

Balfour Beatty (www.balfourbeatty.com) was first appointed to deliver track renewals on behalf of Transport for London in 2010, with the contract extended for two years in 2016; the company said its detailed knowledge of the Underground’s infrastructure and systems, along with its commitment to championing innovation, was instrumental in securing the contract.

Throughout the programme of works, Balfour Beatty will introduce new measures and technologies — such as remote surveying systems and viewing software — to generate significant efficiencies, while continuing to safely deliver the highest standard of work and reducing any potential disruption to the travelling public.

Mark Bullock, CEO of the company’s Rail and Utilities business, said: “This award is testament to our continued focus on driving innovative solutions that deliver a safer rail infrastructure at reduced cost.

“Using our deep knowledge and unrivalled expertise of the rail infrastructure market, we will continue to upgrade this renowned network and keep London moving.”

Works are due to commence in April, with an option to extend the contract for a further six years in 2023.

At its peak, the project will employ 300 people, including a number of apprentices; there will also be opportunities for graduates.
