Kaman UK, a leading provider of aerospace solutions, has invested over £1 million in a new chemical treatment line that will provide a surface treatment capability to the aerospace industry.

Managing director Christopher Morris said: “This is a significant stage in the development of our Darwen site, which will bring extensive benefits to our customers.

“There is a huge demand for surface treatment in the industry, and this line will deliver an efficient and cost-effective solution.”

The line is computer-controlled, with automated loading plus immersion and transfer capabilities through its 3ft, 5ft and 8ft baths.

Kaman expects to secure NADCAP accreditation for the line by the end of the year; it already includes NADCAP-approved penetrant flaw detection plus spray/bake paint and primer equipment.

The company also undertakes chromic acid anodising, chemical conversion coating, the acid pickling of titanium, zinc spraying, welding and paint finishing.

It also has plans in place to introduce tartaric/sulphuric anodising.

This is a replacement technology adopted by the aerospace industry to comply with EU regulations for the reduction of hazardous materials in the working environment (REACH), while giving comparable levels of corrosion protection and coating quality.
