The Emirates Air Line — a cable car across the River Thames in London that links the O2 and the ExCel Exhibition Centre — has won the 2013 Award for Infrastructure or Transportation Structures.

The judges at the Institution of Structural Engineers said that the Transport for London project had been delivered in “a remarkably short time-scale” — only two years from concept through to public opening — and in time for the London 2012 Olympics.

“The synergy between architecture and engineering has yielded a new landmark that is both beautiful and bold. Delivery within a very short time-scale is testament to the whole project team and is a fine example of what the UK construction industry can deliver.”
