A consortium led by civil engineering group Arup has been appointed by Capital Metro to give advice on engineering design and transport infrastructure issues for Australia’s planned Canberra light-rail project. The first stage of Capital Metro is a 12km service along one of Canberra’s fastest-growing ‘corridors’ — from the capital city to the developing suburbs of Gungahlin in the north.

Simon Corbell, Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development, said: “It is vitally important to understand the technical issues fully, as they will put us in the best possible position to deliver a world-class light-rail system for Canberra in a sustainable and well-managed way. It will be a catalyst to unlocking the economic and lifestyle potential of this beautiful city.”
