XYZ has something for everyone at MACH

XYZ has something for everyone at MACH XYZ Machine Tools (www.xyzmachinetools.com) will devote its 250m2 stand — the biggest in the company’s history of exhibiting at MACH — to highlighting a selection of tried and tested favourites — such as the ProtoTrak-controlled SMX range of turret and bed mills and SLX ProTurn lathes.

There will also be a number of Siemens-controlled machining and turning centres. Moreover, the Burlescombe, Devon, company (Hall 5 Stand 5650) will be unveiling new innovations, among which are the XL 780 lathe and the 2op — a totally new concept in machining.

The XL 780 lathe joins an already comprehensive range of medium-size lathes, extending the range to 780mm swing and 3,000mm bed length. It features Siemens 828D control with ShopTurn conversational programming software and bridges the gap between the SLX range of lathes and the larger XYZ XL and oil country lathes. As with other machines in the XYZ large-lathe range, the XL 780 has a substantial single-piece bed providing the rigidity required for heavy-duty turning operations.

XYZ Machine Tools will also be unveiling the Trak 2op concept machine, which it says is set to “revolutionise first- and second-operation work” when it is released for sale later in 2014. Visitors will be able to see how this three-axis CNC machine, with a footprint of just 762 x 1,220mm, could significantly improve work-flow and productivity.

Customers already familiar with XYZ’s ProtoTrak control system are well aware of its simplicity and ease of use, and several models of SMX bed mills and turret mills will demonstrate the capability of machines equipped with this system.

The machines on show will range in size from the SMX 2000 turret mill (with a work envelope of 750 x 380 x 400mm) and the SMX 2500 bed mill (with a work envelope of 780 x 390 x 560mm) to the largest machine in the range — the SMX 5000 bed mill (1,524 x 596 x 540mm).

The ProtoTrak three-axis control system is suitable for one-off and small-batch quantities, while the solid Meehanite cast-iron construction and Turcite B-coated bedways contribute to a rigid and accurate machining platform.

Similarly, the ProTurn SLX range of lathes makes full use of the ProtoTrak control to provide both manual and CNC capability across a wide range of machine specifications. On show will be a cross-section of the SLX range, starting with the smallest — an SLX1630 with a 400mm swing over the bed and a between-centres distance of 760mm — through to the largest machine in the range: the SLX 555, with 560mm swing over the bed and optional between-centres distances of 1,000, 1,750 or 3,000mm.

The SLX range (with the exception of the SLX 1630) differs from many lathes on the market by having a one-piece solid-ribbed cast base, the design and weight of which adds significantly to the machine’s rigidity and precision. Again, XYZ will be demonstrating the simplicity of the ProtoTrak control system; even operators without any knowledge of CNC can be operating and producing parts within a day.

Completing the line-up of ProtoTrak-controlled machines is the XYZ LPM or Lean Production Machine. This is the first ProtoTrak machine to be fitted with an automatic tool changer; other time-saving features include simplified workpiece setting. Complementing the range of ProtoTrak machines will be a number of machining centres and turning centres.

On show will be the XYZ 710 VMC, XYZ 1020 VMC and the high-speed XYZ 1060 VMC with 12,000rev/min spindle (24,000rev/min option) and feed rates of 43m/min in all axes. Common features of these VMCs include Meehanite castings and extra-wide induction-hardened box slideways with Turcite B coatings. The standard specification of the VMC range includes a 20hp 8,000rev/min spindle, and feed rates up to 20m/min in all axes. Additionally, customers can specify either Siemens or Fanuc control.

Two CNC lathes complete the MACH line-up. The XYZ TC 320 LTY has a 45hp 3,300rev/min spindle, a 300mm chuck and a 78mm bar capacity. Combining the machine’s 100mm Y-axis travel with live tooling at each of the turret’s 12 positions means that complex components can be quickly and accurately machined, eliminat-
ing in many cases the need for secondary operations.

Meanwhile, the Compact Turn 52 is the smallest XYZ CNC lathe, with a footprint of just 1,700 ¥ 1,450mm in its standard form. However, it still provides a powerful machining platform, courtesy of its 20hp 5,000rev/min spindle and axis travels of 185 and 325mm in X and Z.
