DP World, which operates Southampton’s container terminal, has begun using six new Kalmar twin-discharge straddle carriers that it acquired in January after receiving funding from Santander Corporate & Commercial.
This follows Southampton Docks opening the UK’s newest container berth as a joint venture with Associated British Ports. The new terminal is designed to handle the largest and deepest vessels in the world.
Nick Loader, finance director of DP World, said: “It is very important that we renew our machinery on a regular basis.
Our terminal operators are highly skilled and work hard to make sure that the competitiveness of Southampton port is retained. We are delighted to have a funding partner in Santander that recognises this.”
