German vehicle maker Daimler has overtaken Eicher Motors to become the third-biggest truck manufacturer in India, less than two years after it first entered the market.
Daimler India Commercial Vehicles — the Stuttgart-based company’s wholly owned subsidiary — now has a 4.3% share of the heavy-duty truck market, according to sales data from the Indian Automotive industry for the first quarter of 2014.
Mumbai-based Tata Motors and Chennai-based Ashok Leyland dominate the Indian truck market, with 59% and 27% of the market respectively in the first quarter. Meanwhile, Eicher — based in the Indian city of Gurgaon — had 3.9% of the market.
Daimler, which is the world leader in truck manufacturing and the third-biggest maker of luxury cars, sells trucks under the Bharat Benz brand in India.
Florian Laudan, spokesman for Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, said: “We have been able to sell more than 10,000 trucks in the past two years, and we are the fastest-growing brand in the Indian commercial-vehicle market. Our strategy of adapting the best technology from our global portfolio for Indian customers has worked so far.”
