The seven winners of the Leverhulme Trust Fellowships were announced last week. These fellowships are awarded to enable mid-career academics to focus on their research; they are part of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s programme to support world-class engineering research that is directly useful to industry or has high growth potential.
The idea is to cover the cost of a replacement member of staff to cover each winner’s administrative and teaching responsibilities for the period of the Fellowship.
The seven research projects include: a bid to improve risk assessment and decommissioning in the nuclear-energy industry; re-designing fibre-optic networks for increased capacity; and developing a new generation of powered wheelchairs. Another project is concerned with predicting the effects of stress inside new materials.
