Loughborough-based Intelligent Energy has received outside investments worth £56 million, enabling the company to launch a new portable energy pack with zero-emission fuel cells.
Intelligent Energy claims that these fuel cells (their only by-product is water) can be used across a range of vehicle types. The company is currently working with Peugeot and Suzuki to create a fleet of zero-emission black cabs; furthermore, it recently signed a large deal with Ascend Telecom — an Indian network services company— to provide hydrogen fuel power units for 4,000 ‘mobile telecom towers’.
Intelligent Energy employs 320 people at its factory in Loughborough University’s Holywell Park, and a further 30 people in the USA, India and Japan.
