‘Green energy’ investment concerns

‘Green energy’ investment concernsThe DLA Piper law firm says that uncertainty over future Government policy is hampering investment in the ‘green energy’ sector.

At a recent event held in Liverpool, DLA partner Darren Walsh told more than 70 people that more investment is needed in renewable-energy schemes if the UK is to hit its low-carbon targets.

He said: “Renewables currently account for 11.3% of total energy generation, and the majority of this comes from offshore wind. The Government’s target is for ‘green energy’ to contribute 15% by 2020.

"The picture is a positive one; deals are being done, and the funding is there, particularly for tried and tested technologies. However, there is concern over Government policy, particularly in light of the recent Cabinet reshuffle. Most investors also want more certainty from the Government on Contracts for Difference, before they will commit to finance.”

In the North West, DLA Piper is working closely with the Stobart Group on a £100 million 20MW CHP bio-mass plant in Widnes. It is also acting for the group in respect of a potential investment in Imperative Energy, which is developing a CHP gasification plant that will heat the NEC.
