Ernest Wright & Son, believed to be the UK’s last remaining company hand-making scissors, has been saved after a video posted to the Vimeo Web site (vimeo.com/98953952) went ‘viral’.
The video — called the Putter (as in ‘the putter-togetherer’) and made by Shaun Bloodworth — has had over half a million ‘hits’ and resulted in a rapid increase in orders, with a large number of requests from the USA.
Nick Wright, managing director of the Sheffield-based company, said: “We are completely overwhelmed. In June, we thought it was all over; a month later, we had over 2,300 orders. We are absolutely elated, and our phone systems have crashed due to demand. However, we won’t be complacent; our customers still need their orders, and we are working hard to deliver.”
The film is part of Storying Sheffield, which is part-funded by the Arts & Humanities department at the University of Sheffield, with music and sound by The Black Dog.
