Global aircraft order book recordThe UK aerospace trade organisation ADS Group has released figures showing that the global aircraft order book has reached a new record, following a substantial number of orders in August.

It now stands at 12,113 aircraft and 21,128 engines, which could be worth up to £160 billion to the UK economy.

Furthermore, it is estimated that more than 29,000 new large civil airliners, 24,000 business jets, 5,800 regional aircraft and 40,000 helicopters will be required by 2032.

ADS Group chief executive Paul Everitt said: “This latest data signals the strength of the sector. We estimate that the current order book could equate to more than nine years of work for the aerospace sector, giving industry the confidence to focus on the long-term picture by investing in skills and R&D to develop the technologies of tomorrow.

“UK industry has a global reputation for specialising in the design, development and manufacture of a broad range of parts, including wings, engines, passenger seating, landing gear, cabin lighting systems and much more. A close look at any aircraft will reveal a significant proportion of UK-produced components.”

Reacting to the record order book, Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “Our aerospace sector is a global success story. We continue to work hand in hand with industry.

"Together we have committed £2 billion to create the cutting-edge Aerospace Technology Institute, which is helping us to win contracts to develop and build the planes and helicopters of the future here in the UK.”

More than 3,000 UK companies — employing around 230,000 people — are involved in the design and manufacture of aircraft parts.
