By using aluminium instead of steel for a number of components, Walter GB Ltd, Bromsgrove (
www.walter-tools.com) reports that it has almost halved the weight of a single-edge precision-boring tool, resulting in much easier handling while retaining similar performance properties to the conventional tool.
Walter’s first new LWS (Light Weight Solution) tool for counter-boring and boring on all types of material is the Precision B4031.C.
Available in diameters from 90 to 153mm, the new design offers a number of additional benefits. These include lower acceleration and deceleration forces to help minimise wear and tear on the machine and its spindle, plus reduced tool vibration.
Furthermore, lighter tools are beneficial if a machine’s tool gripper is restricted by weight capacity.
The new self-balancing (for high surface finish) tooling is available with an internal coolant supply and features an adjustment accuracy of 0.002mm — plus it can accommodate a wide range of indexable inserts.
It also incorporates the Capto conical polygon clamping connection, which is backlash-free and offers a repeatability accuracy of ±2µm, a high clamping force and a good support face. In addition, it is self-centring, so no detent is required.
